5 Ways to Make Your Business More Sustainable

Even with everything that is going on in the world, there is still a huge focus on how everyone can do their part in being greener to save the planet. Small businesses can surprisingly have a big impact on the environment, so it is up to business owners if they want that to be a positive or negative one.

A lot of customers are very eco-conscious and look to see if businesses are doing their part in being more sustainable. It is a great thing to promote as a small business owner.

We have complied a list of ways in how you can become more eco-friendly

Switch to a Paperless System

Recently a lot of businesses have made the switch to paperless systems, it is a great way to effectively reduce waste. In the UK alone 9.9 MILLION tonnes of paper are used each year. Only 80% of this figure is recycled, according to Recycling Bins.

The switch to paperless can help make your business more streamline, instead of paper receipts opt for email receipts. (This way customers always have a copy!) It is very useful if any documents need signing, it saves the hassle – and CO2 emissions- of having to post out documents, wait for a client or customer to sign them, and then send them back. DocuSign is a great service for signing online documents.

At some stage though you are going to need a piece of paper. So, make sure you are purchasing locally and sustainably sourced, recycled paper.

Green Shipping Methods

Be sure to use a size-appropriate box when packaging your items. There is no sense using a box ten times the size of the item being shipped. Use packaging that is as compact as possible, reducing cost and wastage!

Instead of using bubble wrap or Styrofoam, which aren’t recyclable, opt for shredded paper to use as package fillers. This way you are putting office waste to use while omitting non-recyclable materials.

Reduce Commutes

Get your employees involved! Offer a few days working from home if you have returned to the office. This is a great way of having less cars on the roads, therefore, reducing CO2 emissions. Another great way to do this is to offer a ‘bike to work’ scheme, where employees can be reimbursed on any biking equipment they buy to cycle to work. Another good incentive is a carpool or travel card to encourage employees to use public transport getting to work.

Eco-Friendly Packaging

While on the topic of sustainable materials, another great way to be a greener business is opting for easily recycled packaging than plastic packaging. Swap out single use plastics for materials that breakdown more quickly. Using starch-based products, like biodegradable packing peanuts are a great option as they easily breakdown with just water.

Make your packaging an experience, it is a great way to build brand awareness while making it sustainable and memorable! The more functional, sturdy, or useful your packaging is the more likely your customers might find a future use for it.

Opt for recyclable and recycled materials, even Amazon have made all their packaging fully recyclable, they changed their adhesive tape to materials that can be 100% recycled.

Its great to see big brands like this make an effort to be more sustainable and hold themselves accountable for reducing their carbon footprint.

Recycle in the Office

When in the office its important that everyone does their part in making an effort to recycle. Having separate bins for paper, general and recyclable waste will prevent from all rubbish being thrown into the one bin. You don’t have to limit your recycling to just paper and plastic. You can offer recycling options for metal, certain food wastes or even electronic waste too! Having more options in your office will ensure that you are optimising your company’s recycling efforts.
